Modularis: The Multifunctional Shelf

A Versatile and Customizable Shelving System

Modularis is a modular shelving system designed by Mariela Capote and Christian Alvarez. Inspired by the flexibility of Lego building blocks, Modularis offers a unique and customizable solution for organizing and displaying items in different spaces. With its innovative design and eco-friendly materials, this multifunctional shelf is a perfect addition to any modern lifestyle.

Modularis is designed to be assembled according to the needs of the user. The modules can be arranged in various configurations, allowing for a wide variety of shelving designs to be composed of the same units. This adaptability provides the flexibility not only to create personalized shelves but also to rearrange them as much as needed or desired. Whether it's for exhibiting products in stores, creating bookcases, or storing a combination of items, Modularis lets the user become the designer.

One of the unique properties of Modularis is its use of ecologically friendly materials. The modules are made of tobacco agglomerate board, which is composed of tobacco stems from the harvest. This innovative choice not only provides a sustainable alternative to traditional materials but also adds a touch of uniqueness to the design. Additionally, relief stickers can be added to each module, allowing for easy categorization and universal use.

The design of Modularis ensures its longevity. The modules are made of agglomerated tobacco stem board, which is known for its durability. This means that the shelving system will last for years, providing a reliable and functional storage solution for any space.

The interaction with Modularis is simple and intuitive. The standardized modules are held together by expanders, creating a sturdy structure. The whole piece is then fixed to the wall with hidden mounting brackets, ensuring stability and safety.

The development of Modularis was not without its challenges. The designers aimed to create a module shape that could form larger shapes by following a single model. The result is a design that goes beyond the traditional square shape, allowing for more complex patterns and configurations.

Modularis was developed in La Habana by Mariela Capote and Christian Alvarez. The project started in April 2010 and was completed in August 2010. The designers conducted extensive research on current trends in shelving design and materials, leading them to create a modular system that offers a more flexible and durable alternative to traditional options.

Modularis has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This prestigious award recognizes the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

With its versatility, sustainability, and innovative design, Modularis is a perfect choice for those seeking a customizable and functional shelving solution. Whether it's for displaying products, organizing books, or storing various items, Modularis offers endless possibilities for creating a personalized and stylish space.
